Endoscopic Sinus Surgery (FESS) Los Angeles

Request an Appointment

Functional endoscopic sinus surgery (FESS) is a procedure that inserts a small fiber optic telescope (endoscope) into nasal openings to remove pieces of bone and tissue that are causing a blockage. This method restores the natural drainage pathways in the nose, which relieves any pain and pressure associated with chronic sinusitis.

As a leader in endoscopic sinus surgery, Sinus Center Los Angeles utilizes the most advanced robotics and endoscopic technologies available on the market today. The procedure is typically done in an outpatient surgery center under general anesthesia. Once you have conducted your consultation with one of our specialists, they will decide whether to include antibiotics or oral steroids as part of your regimen.

Candidates For Endoscopic Sinus Surgery

Those with more extensive sinus conditions that have complicated anatomy requiring a more detailed surgery than Balloon Sinuplasty. Balloon Sinuplasty is usually the first method of choice as it is less invasive. Functional Endoscopic Surgery is sometimes combined with Balloon Sinuplasty to enable improved sinuses.

FESS can treat an array of symptoms including sinusitis, nasal polyps, chronic nasal congestions, and sinus-related snoring and sleep apnea. Often, patients suffering from conditions like chronic sinusitis will experience recurring sinus infections, impaired sense of smell, tear duct blockage, brain fluid leakage into the nose, and many other problematic symptoms. If you are having other symptoms regarding the blockage of the nasal passage, contact us at your earliest convenience to see how we can help.

The Procedure

During the procedure, an otorhinolaryngologist—a doctor who specializes in ear, nose, and throat (ENT) treatment—will use specially designed surgical instruments to treat any problematic conditions. Prior to the development of this technique, sinus surgery was performed by incising the exterior of the nose, which prompted long recovery times and high levels of discomfort and pain for the patient. Now, all surgeries are performed inside the nasal opening with targeted movements by an endoscope.

In some cases that involve a limited amount of nasal opening, a balloon may be used to widen the natural breathing pathway.

Recovery

While the recovery period depends on the surgery performed, many patients report having minimal pain or discomfort after the surgery is performed. For more extensive surgeries, stronger pain medication may be prescribed to mitigate higher pain levels. Within the first few days following the procedure, postoperative congestion, drainage, and discomfort should begin to subside, although some minor symptoms may linger for a few weeks longer.

You may also be required to complete a regimen of antibiotics or steroids depending on the review by your doctor.
